A pod of dolphins greeted a wreath of white flowers placed in the ocean at dawn this morning.

As the sky turned pink a group of Sacred Heart College staff and students, Federal MP Ian Goodenough, army chaplain Richard Whereat and guests looked out to sea and thought of our local men coming ashore at Gallipoli 100 years ago.

Runners who kept their morning routines along the water’s edge and the swimmers who dotted the calm surf were reminders of the freedom and peace of Australian life, and the sacrifices of our Anzacs.

During his address, Chaplain Whereat said a beach service was reflective of the original Dawn Services held on the beach in Albany.

He said although Anzac Day was for acknowledging and respecting our fallen in Gallipoli, we could not forget the toll of wars more recent, especially in the last 10 years in conflicts with the Middle East.

“The cost of freedom came with a loss of life,” he said.

“We should enjoy the great life in Australia to honour those who died and were injured and never forget them.”

He said he knew many families who still struggled with the grief of war.

Year 11 Keelan Thompson

Sacred Heart College students delivered readings and prayers before the Last Post played by Year 11 Keelan Thompson.

Grace (Year 7) and Anne Murphy (Year 8) and Mr Goodenough lay a wreath into the ocean.

The sisters wore their grandfather’s medals and their father, and current serving defence force member, Ray Murphy spoke at a whole school ceremony at 9am.
